Abstract

The Trans Latinx Community has been one of the most harmed due to the coronavirus pandemic in New York. According to a survey by the Williams Institute at the University of California Law School (UCLA), there were 17,300 self-identified transgender Latinas in 2016 in the State of New York. Most of them are people of color, undocumented, without any type of health insurance or job stability. To these vulnerabilities must be added the violence and prejudices that still exist against this community, which affect the equality of their rights.

There is no official data that shows how many transgender people have died due to the coronavirus in New York. In fact, on the New York City Department of Health website, there is even a note stating: "Due to the small number of cases among transgender and non-conforming gender persons, data on those cases are not included in this table at this time.” However, grassroots organizations such as Colectivo Intercultural Transgrediendo, Trans Latina Network, and Lunicorns (of Staten Island) have kept their own records of deaths from coronavirus and estimate that, so far, 30 transgender people have died in New York City from causes related to the virus.

These same organizations have been in charge of distributing food, providing masks and other protective implements, as well as organizing activities that have allowed the community not to feel disconnected during the quarantine.
