Abstract

In this paper, Eugene Spruck, a Weissman Center Fellow who served as the Chief Economist of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for more than a decade, reviews economic activity in the NY/NJ metropolitan area in 2009. Based on a review of available data, the paper concludes that the region was hit particularly hard during this period. The value of two-way international trade through the Customs District declined 23.5 percent in 2009.
