Abstract
In the Fall of 2026, the Brooklyn College Department of Theatre produced the play, Indecent by Paula Vogel. This play was directed by then MFA Directing candidate, Sam Plattus. In this production, I played the role of Avram, who serves to represent a handful of characters, including Sholem Asch, the author of the 1906 play God of Vengeance, the content and surrounding events of which Indecent is based on. This show ran from December 5-9 as a part of the 2025-2026 season. In this thesis, I will delve into the life of playwright Paula Vogel and discuss her prior works, their themes, and what led her to the creation of Indecent. Beyond that, I intend to detail the themes of this play, its significance and relationship to the socio-political climate of today, as well as its historical context. In subsequent chapters, I will provide my analysis of the play in terms of its unique world, sense of time, progression, and action. Beyond that, I will discuss and detail the process by which I go about excavating the role I am to realize and how the people [in the play] included affect and are affected by the events that occur, as well as my journey through rehearsal and development.
