Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the temporary threshold shifts (TTS) in dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants. The specific aim of this study is to compare the differences in temporary shifts caused by the different dental equipment and the proximity to the equipment. The current literature does not compare the change in hearing thresholds of dental personnel.

Methods: Dentists, dental assistants, and hygienists from Hermann Dental Associates will be given a case history form to determine inclusion status for this study. Exclusion criteria will include known hearing loss and significant noise exposure the day prior. The subjects will stand at the approximate distance from the equipment and the decibel output will be recorded. Comprehensive research of each type of equipment model and manufacturer will be conducted to identify the decibel output. The subjects will be screened prior to treating patients. The screening will include pure tone testing of 250-8000 Hz using supra-aural headphones and a distortion product otoacoustic emission test. Participants will be screened a second time to determine the temporary threshold shift caused by the equipment.

Significance and implications: If the results of the study prove that there is a difference in TTS among the subject groups, this information can be submitted to dental journals to raise awareness on the potential shift in hearing due to noise exposure from the equipment.

Key Words: temporary threshold shift, noise exposure, hearing protection
