Abstract

Abstract

This study proposes a new online placement test specifically created for students of Spanish at New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) - an institution characterized by the great diversity of its educational community. In 2017, the Humanities Department decided to create its own foreign language placement test. In the case of the Spanish language, this was created and piloted in 2018 in a sample of 144 students distributed in three levels - basic, intermediate and high advanced. The results of these tests showed relevant data that allowed to identify unexpected factors in the analysis, such as the lack of dedication to the test, the large number of students placed outside their level, and the high number of Spanish heritage speakers with good communicative skills who attended these classes not only in the advanced, but also in the intermediate level.
