Abstract

I believe that learning is a life-long process, cumulative, reflective/critical, experiential, accessible to some people and not to others, and directed toward some action that benefits self, community, and the world. From this perspective, we will adopt the open pedagogy method of learning because it is most suitable and beneficial for the following reasons:

  1. In open pedagogy the learning doesn’t end after the semester but what we learn in class should motivate all of us to continue to reflect on our lives and the circumstances of our times and neighborhoods and seek ways to address them.

  2. Learning builds on learning. It is not fragmented. So I hope open pedagogy gives us an opportunity to use knowledge from various sources to understand issues and make informed decisions in life.

  3. None of us is an empty slate (tabula raza). We have a lot of knowledge based on our experiences and open pedagogy gives us an opportunity to put those experiences to use for the benefit of all.

  4. Open pedagogy makes information accessible to many people, not just a few in the classroom. Just as others can learn from us we can also learn from them through feedback they provide us when our work is made available and accessible to others.

  5. The end goal of education and open pedagogy should be to make self, community. and the world a better place.

One aspect of open pedagogy is that your work is accessible to others in or outside of the classroom or both. You are not obliged to make your work available to others outside of the class, although it is encouraged. For those of you who choose not to make their work open to the world at this time, your work will be open to your colleagues in the class who will access it on blackboard and provide some feedback.
