Abstract

This laboratory manual introduces an innovative approach to teaching astronomy by integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools into hands-on educational activities. Aimed at undergraduate and general education students, the manual guides learners through interactive exercises that involve evaluating AI-generated text responses, creating scientifically inspired images, and producing short educational videos about astronomical phenomena. By engaging with platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DALL·E, and InVideo, students develop critical thinking skills, enhance their digital literacy, and deepen their understanding of space science. The method emphasizes inquiry-based learning, creativity, and scientific communication, preparing students to become thoughtful users of AI in academic and research contexts. Designed for flexible use in diverse learning environments, this manual supports instructors in fostering meaningful student interaction with emerging AI technologies in astronomy education.

Comments

This lab manual was developed for use in general astronomy courses at the City University of New York (CUNY), with a focus on enhancing student engagement through the use of freely available generative AI tools. It has been successfully piloted with non-science majors and is adaptable for use in STEM and interdisciplinary educational settings. Feedback, classroom experiences, and suggestions for improvement are welcome and may be sent to the author at: vznamenskiy@bmcc.cuny.edu. Contributions of student work, AI-generated content, or instructional adaptations are also encouraged and may be shared through the affiliated Facebook groups: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GeneralAstronomy https://www.facebook.com/groups/artificialintelligenceforeducation We welcome all those who have somehow familiarized themselves with this laboratory work, conducted classes with students based on it, or performed this laboratory work, to participate in the survey: https://forms.gle/z8cMQEGfpD8U991u8
