Abstract
This assignment guides undergraduate early childhood education students in collaboratively designing a literacy-rich classroom environment for children ages 3–5. Students research features of high-quality early language and literacy spaces, create a mock classroom layout using a format of their choice, and justify their design decisions by applying relevant developmental and literacy theories. The project emphasizes creativity, inclusivity, and practical application of early childhood literacy principles. Students conclude by demonstrating a literacy activity that connects directly to their classroom design and supports children’s communication, emergent literacy, and engagement.
