Abstract

On April 26, 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau delivered to the president of the United States results from the 2020 decennial census to be used for apportionment in the House of Representatives. Those apportionment results showed that the state of Connecticut’s delegation would remain unchanged at five representatives for the next ten years beginning with the 118th Congress (2023-2025)

Apportionment is the process by which the 435 seats in the House of Representatives are divided among the 50 states of the union. This is a constitutionally-mandated task based on the decennial enumeration the Census Bureau conducts.iii The constitution guarantees each state one representative in the House of Representatives; the remaining 385 seats are then apportioned based on each state’s total population.
