Abstract
As a two-time Academy Award nominated film producer and the executive director of a graduate film school, I am interested in where filmmakers find their inspiration and also how educators nurture aspiring filmmakers in an academic setting. Filmology is a documentary short film drawn from extensive interviews with filmmakers, film school educators, and film students/alumni. Interviewees share their perspectives on the power of visual storytelling, the influence and inspiration found in the films of others, the themes they are drawn to, and the distinction between the art and the craft of filmmaking and visual storytelling. Most importantly, the central question driving this project concerns whether or not filmmaking can be taught and learned in accredited university programs at film schools.
