Abstract
This dissertation is about the soldiers’ experience on the Italian Front of the First World War. Specifically, it is about the experience of the landscape, and how such experience was portrayed, memorialized, and mythicized in war literature. I have narrowed my analysis down to the writings of those who wore the uniform, examining the works of canonized authors such as Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Clemente Rebora, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Carlo Emilio Gadda, and others, as well as the production of amateur writers, who in some cases had never written a page before the draft. I have dealt with poetry, novels, memoirs, diaries, and correspondence, in an attempt to understand how Italian soldiers perceived the landscape in which they served from May 1915 to November 1918, and how the landscape, in turn, shaped their war experience.
