Abstract
The Critical Artificial Intelligence Literacy course is designed to equip students and educators with the tools to engage with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies critically. Initially conceived as a syllabus for the course Critical Approaches to Education Technology in the Digital Humanities Department of the Graduate Center, the project evolved into a comprehensive, modular program addressing the historical, technical, ethical, and societal dimensions of AI.
This course encourages a multidisciplinary approach by integrating perspectives from various fields, such as history, philosophy, ethics, technology, law, and social sciences. The design process draws from foundational courses like Digital Pedagogy and Methods, Theory, Design, and Practice. It encourages faculty and students to participate in the sociotechnical underpinnings of the field of Digital Humanities. It fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between technology and society.
The course is not a one-time learning experience but a foundational guide and a starting point for ongoing exploration. It aims to equip students and educators with the tools to critically assess AI's role in society, fostering a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between technology and society.
