Abstract
The murder of Deisy Garcia and her children in 2014 caused an uproar in the community and leaving many demanding for a change in the language problem between police officers and non-English residents. However, the City’s many attempts have left many unsatisfied with the results. Through research in New York City documents, precincts, court cases and riding along with the police in Staten Island we were able to showcase that although some police officers are using interpreting services to better help the community, others are choosing to not use them. With cases like Brenda Martinez, a transgender woman who is a victim of a hate crime that occurred in Queens. When she reported her case, the police did not offer translation, and her case is still pending.
