Abstract
My community is made up of people who are victims/survivors of human rights violations. The two communities I worked with Mott Haven arrestees who were beaten and abused by the NYPD in July 2020 during a protest against police brutality, and newly arrived migrants coming into New York City from the southern border in the last eighteen months, The New New Yorkers. On June 4, 2020, 300 people were peacefully protesting in Mott Haven, a low-income neighborhood in Harlem, when they were kettled and arrested by the NYPD ten minutes before 8 pm, which was the time of a temporary curfew the city had put in place weeks earlier. Police kettled protestors, blocking off any possible exits for protesters to leave at 8 pm and then brutally pepper sprayed, beat, and arrested them. While my work with Black Lives Matter protesters began in March 2023, my film work with migrants began four months later in July 2023. Both projects are still ongoing.
