Abstract

Between 2015 and 2011, about 4,000 women lost their lives while delivering a baby in the United States. That’s 1,000 lost lives every year.

The causes of these deaths are often preventable and are the mere result of racial discrimination. African-American mothers, for instance, have a three-time higher rate of dying than White mothers. Several investigative investigations have been conducted on the racial disparities and the lack of resources offered nationwide, but, so far, none has focused on the local level. This capstone focuses solely in New York City and the three populations that are being affected the most by maternal mortality and morbidity: African-American, Haitian and Latina mothers. This capstone also includes a detailed analysis of the several hospital inspections initiates as a result of a mother or a baby dying and the financial resources that are being redirected to New York State and City in order to tackle this issue.

Social media strategy: Our social media strategy is to start publishing the piece in chapters as it would be more digestible for our audience since every piece is fairly long. We envision using our charts to promote the story as a whole with the purpose of teasing the readers with an immediate visualization of what the whole story is about.
