Abstract
Art in Education Workshop: Art Education for Classroom Teachers. This syllabus provides the guidelines for a ‘zero textbook’ Art Education Course for students who are pre-service or in-service classroom teachers in Early Childhood Education & Elementary Education. The syllabus includes links for assigned readings, videos, & podcasts about teaching studio projects in a range of media, as well as introductions to contemporary & historical artists who work in these media; prompts and guiding questions for students’ response to these weekly assignments follow each set of texts. The course supports Culturally Responsive & Sustaining Teaching (CRST) and incorporates Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and consideration of teaching art to children with disabilities.
In-depth guidelines for 2 larger assignments are also included:
Designing a Developmentally Appropriate (DAP), CRST, UDL Lesson Plan that is process-focused, and meets NYS Visual Art Standards & the NYC Blueprint for the Arts, along with a Peer Response form for in-class partner critique & feedback
Final Project (Essay, In-class Presentation, Artwork) for which students visit a museum, gallery, or public art site, choose an artist, create their own artwork inspired by this artist, teach their classmates about this artist and how to teach this artist and their work to children.
