Abstract

The history of Europe has had a profound impact on the history of the world. The idea of the nation, of democracy, of industrialization as well as many powerful criticisms of these concepts, originated in Europe. Our world today is still shaped by a long legacy of political, cultural, and economic colonization with Europe at its center. European colonization not only caused the enrichment of Europeans and suffering of people outside of Europe, but also led European countries into devastating wars, famines, destruction, and even genocide. In this class we will look at how Europe was created and defined in the 20th century, studying the dynamics within Europe to explain their reverberations outside of the continent.
