Abstract

This is a manual that will move through the various formats of mobility. As part of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, students must gain knowledge and skill acquisition to support independence. One such way is to help individuals gain or regain mobility. There are many ways that individuals can access their environments. The choice of type of mobility depends on many factors and changes over time. Students must develop an understanding of such factors in making decisions and learn to safely foster forms of mobility. The ones developed in this manual will cover bed mobility, transfers, wheelchair mobility, and ambulation. Each skill/procedure is covered in a chapter that has learning objectives, a brief overview of the relevant content, procedures with the rationale, and key takeaways. Photographs and videos relevant to the topic are included. Key terms are laid out in the Glossary.

Comments

This handbook should be used in conjunction with existing courses in any health care program. This resource is not intended to replace core resources in health care programs that provide comprehensive information. An understanding human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology is a required asset to understand the content effectively. This handbook provides guidance to develop knowledge and technical skills of various forms of mobility and special topics related to patient care that physical therapist assistants perform. This handbook emphasizes safer care for patients by outlining clinical decision-making steps, practice samples, and case scenarios for the entry-level type of expertise and knowledge required to decrease adverse events.
