In 1961 the New York Trade School, the oldest trade school in America, became the Voorhees Technical Institute. This change reflected the new objective of the school, which sought to provide a more comprehensive education to its students and to graduate college-trained technicians. Voorhees Technical Institute continued to operate as an independent body until it merged with the New York City Community College in 1971 to become the New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York.
