Abstract

Successful scholarly communications outreach centers on a consistent, flexible, and holistic approach. We provide training and support throughout the lifecycle of scholarly communications. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.

The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.

Buy-in from administration has been invaluable: by regularly presenting, we have gained support from key stakeholders. We visit department meetings regularly. This January, we provided a hands-on workshop on evaluation of scholarship for every departmental appointments committee.

Our strategy in raising awareness is based in consistent, clear messaging. We focus on how services like the institutional repository benefit faculty: our current poster campaign brands the institutional repository as a means to “amplify your scholarship.” We are now launching a Scholarly Publishing Clinic to reach faculty at their point of need. This presentation will reflect on our lessons learned.
