Abstract
BULLETIN DESCRIPTION INFO 7001. The Technology of Information. 3 hr.; 3cr. The course will introduce the conceptual and practical elements of visual and computer literacy for the library and information science profession. Particular attention will be paid to libraries and information centers.
EXPANDED COURSE DESCRIPTION The evolution into the age of information has created a requirement that professional librarians establish and steadily increase their understanding of four areas of literacy: oral, print, visual, and technology. Professional training has long been concentrated on the oral and printed aspects of information with some minor attention to the visual and technological. Library and information professionals must now contend with the massive shifts in information due to the advances in digital/computing, communication, and other technologies. This has created the need to develop a more comprehensive understanding and knowledge in these areas, which have been heightened by a general shift in the culture towards the digital and the popularity of iconic or visually based system tools. The recent development of social software and other online collaborative tools and emerging technologies have added additional elements to the overall mix of tools. This course will give students an introduction to the above areas to ensure that the profession remains relevant, efficient and effective in a time of dynamic changes.
