Abstract
Charter schools are publicly funded, independently operated schools and they represent a form of school choice for the students of New York state.
This thesis will discuss their role in the New York state educational landscape, highlighting the history and legislative process that brought about their existence, as well as the debate surrounding the very idea of charter schools and school choice in public education in the present and in the near future.
