Abstract

The course introduces econometric techniques that are useful for conducting empirical analyses in economics and finance. Its purpose is to enable students to master these concepts and successfully complete an independent empirical project. The course will be structured into three roughly equal parts: the first part will cover probability and sets, providing a foundation for statistical reasoning; the second part will focus on statistics, delving into quantitative methods for analyzing economic data; and the third part will introduce econometrics, emphasizing linear models that establish relationships between two or more variables of interest. We will explore linear models from both theoretical and practical perspectives, including simple economic applications. In the initial phase, we will learn to measure and interpret the magnitudes of linear relationships and test hypotheses about their nature. The latter part will address the specification of linear models, discussing how to select variables and transform them to ensure linear relationships.
