Abstract

What does Painting— its act, like a search; or material— have to do with truth? Probably nothing. Or what does it matter, or why ask? To Paint is to dig— deep! wide! to excavate! but in a busy park, and— now, look! you’ve ruined the softball game. Using the material conventions of early Christian icon painting— rabbit-skin gesso, viscous egg medium suspending ground pigments— the layers of my paintings accumulate like sediment. The surface is dredged, scraped back, leaving striations like stone and refined in search of light; space; revelation! or, piled high again, over and over.
