Abstract

Bartmann jugs are a distinct Rhenish stoneware originating in the Rhineland area of what is now Germany during the mid-16th century. Bartmann jugs became a global trade commodity during the Early Modern Period and were produced in several stoneware centers along the River Rhine. Focusing on Bartmann jugs from archaeological sites in New York, this paper utilizes theories of new materialism to examine the relational ontology between humans and Bartmann jugs. This paper situates Bartmann jugs as actors within the broader network that is the ‘Rhenish Tradition’ of stoneware production, that formed relationships with and shaped the lives of the diverse communities that lived in Colonial New Amsterdam and New York.
