Abstract
In the 1920s and 1930s, Hans Burkhardt (1904–1994) assembled the largest individual private collection of works attributed to Arshile Gorky (c. 1904–1948) in the world. Through reconstructed histories and comparative visual analyses, this thesis examines Burkhardt's collection of approximately 240 objects, questioning his attributions and, ultimately, demonstrating that they cannot be left to his opinion alone.
