Abstract

This thesis examines Zhang Yu’s works as a publisher, editor, curator, and artist within and beyond the shiyan shuimo (experimental ink art) movement and genre from 1993 to the present time in the People's Republic of China. This thesis highlights how Zhang engages with the visual language of both ink painting and video, installation, and performance art in his works, which open up a new possibilities for the development of ink art in contemporary China.
