Abstract

The works of Mariano Fortuny y Cabral (1838-1874) illustrate the exploration of an individual's identity that mirrored that of the Spanish nation as a place geographically, temporally, and politically caught in-between, thus confronting the genre of Orientalism by subjecting it to the specificities of a Spanish context.
