Abstract

I'm delighted to present the updated version of Geology Lab Activities, initially developed during the COVID-19 pandemic for online learning. As we have returned to the classroom, this revised edition remains a versatile educational tool for community college students, adaptable for both online and in-person classes.

This manual combines my preferred open-access materials with my own contributions, forming a cohesive resource for non-major geology students. Thanks to a CUNY OER grant, I partnered with graphic designer Ari Nakamura, whose innovative and elegant design has truly elevated the book.

Our labs are crafted to be engaging and relevant for non-major community college geology students, fostering scientific growth. Rooted in New York's geologic history, each lab follows a constructivist learning approach, encouraging exploration through hands-on data analysis, interpretation, and sketching.

The curriculum includes fourteen labs, starting with an introduction to observation and concluding with a field trip guide to the American Museum of Natural History's Hall of Planet Earth (both online and in-person versions) and the Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals.

I hope this updated manual continues to inspire and educate.
