Abstract
This open educational resource provides a complete homework assignment system for ENGL 102 (English Composition II) at the City University of New York. Designed as a companion to Writing Workshop Journal: A Student-Centered Guide for College Composition (Zhelezcheva 2025), it offers detailed instructions, templates, and a curated bank of writing exercises that support students in developing ideas for their major essays through sustained, low-stakes writing practice.
The booklet is organized around three core assignment types — the Homework Assignment, the Reply to the Homework Assignment, and the Research Log — each structured as a four-component journal entry: Opening Freewrite, Exercise, Reflection, and Future Explorations. Students choose from a Short List of seven idea-development exercises and a Long List of more than thirty exercises spanning idea development, study skills, creative writing, and planning activities, allowing them to align their writing process with their own learning preferences and circumstances.
Grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and post-process theory, the resource rejects prescriptive writing formulas in favor of student-directed exploration. Faculty teaching first-year composition courses may adopt the materials in full or adapt any individual exercise, template, or assignment for their own classrooms.
