Abstract
Arabesque ornaments in sixteenth-century printed books demonstrate diverse yet persistent associations, rooted in identifications with the eastern Mediterranean and antiquity, but entangled with Latin Christian confessional identities. In turn, the arabesque’s Christian associations highlight Latin European attitudes toward the Christian communities of the Islamicate world along the paths of shared ornament.
